What’s the difference between “college” and “university”?

In the states it’s the same. Abroad a University is more “prestigious”.

I’ve taken to calling it University in the states, ‘cause I like how that sounds.

    “You go to University?”

That’s not true (for the US). A University is made up of colleges: college of engineering, college of agriculture, liberal arts college. See wikipedia.
