I’m sorry, but I don’t see the alleged “gulf”. Google’s business model was limited to licensing their search engine technology until they + Paul Bucheit stumbled upon AdWords. Yahoo was king of the world but missed out on intent-based search as an advertising model and then hired Terry Semel in one of the dumbest dot-com moves ever.
There are tons of successful companies that came out of people solving problems for themselves (e.g. Craigslist) or purely based on business genius (e.g. Amazon.com) that are not rooted in academia.
